What these PDF tools do

Five everyday jobs in one place, all done on your own device:

  • Images to PDF puts one picture on each page, in the order you choose.
  • Merge PDFs joins several files into one.
  • Split PDF cuts a file into several, by page ranges, one page per file, or every N pages.
  • Rotate pages turns some or all pages by 90 or 180 degrees.
  • Extract pages keeps only the pages you name, in the order you type them.

The files are read and rewritten by your browser, in a background worker so the page stays responsive. Nothing is uploaded, which is the reason to use a tool like this for contracts, ID scans, invoices and exam papers.

How to use it

  1. Pick the tab for the job.
  2. Drop the files on the box or choose them with the button. For images and merging you can add several; reorder them with the arrow buttons or by dragging a row.
  3. Set the options. For images, choose the page size (A4, US Letter, or a page the size of the picture), orientation, margin and image quality. For split, rotate and extract, type the pages you want, such as 1-3, 5, 8- where 8- means page 8 to the end.
  4. Press the button, then download the result. A split that makes several files can be downloaded one by one or as a ZIP.

Images to PDF in detail

JPEG and PNG pictures are placed into the PDF without being recompressed, so nothing is lost and large batches are quick. Other formats (WebP, GIF, BMP) are redrawn first, and so is a JPEG that carries a rotation flag from a phone, because PDF viewers ignore that flag and would show the photo sideways. The tool fixes it for you.

Each picture is scaled to fit the page inside the margin and centred. "Automatic" orientation turns the page to match the picture, so a landscape photo gets a landscape page. "Same size as the image" makes each page exactly as large as its picture. If you need a smaller PDF, choose Balanced or Small file: the pictures are shrunk and saved as JPEG, which usually cuts the size a great deal.

A worked example

You have three PDFs of 10, 4 and 6 pages: a contract, an annex and a signature sheet. Open Merge, add them in that order and press Merge. The result has 20 pages. Now you only want the first three pages and page 5 sent to a colleague: open Extract, load the merged file and type 1-3, 5. The new file has four pages. To send the annex alone, open Split with the range 11-14 on the merged file.

Common mistakes

  • Typing the number printed on the page. A page numbered 1 may be the fourth page of the file, because covers and contents pages come first. The tool counts the position in the file, so open the PDF in a viewer and read the page counter there.
  • Merging in the wrong order. Check the list before pressing the button; rows move up and down.
  • Expecting a password-protected PDF to open. These files cannot be read. If you know the password, open the file in your PDF viewer and save a copy without it, then use the copy.
  • Splitting by bookmarks. Split works on page numbers only.

What is kept and what is not

Pages are copied with their text, images and drawings exactly as they are. Bookmarks, form fields and links that point to other pages are not carried into merged, split or extracted files. Merged, split and extracted files are new documents and do not inherit the title or author of the originals. A rotation is stored as a page setting, so turning a page back is lossless.

Limits

Up to 30 PDFs of 100 MB each, 100 images of 40 MB each, and a split can create at most 300 files. A damaged PDF is reported by name.

Frequently asked questions

Are my PDFs uploaded anywhere?

No. The files are opened and rewritten in your browser. They stay in your device's memory until you download the result and are gone when you close the page.

Why can't it open my PDF?

Two common reasons: the file is protected with a password, or it is damaged. The tool names the file and says which. For a protected file, save an unprotected copy in your PDF viewer first.

Does merging or splitting reduce quality?

No. Pages are copied as they are, without re-rendering text or images. Only the images-to-PDF tab can change picture quality, and only if you choose Balanced or Small file.

Why is my photo sideways in other PDF makers but fine here?

Phones store the orientation of a photo in a flag that PDF viewers ignore. This tool reads the flag and turns the pixels upright before placing them on the page.

Will the merged file keep my bookmarks and form fields?

No. Pages, text, images and drawings are copied, but bookmarks, fillable form fields and links between pages are not. If you need them, merge in the program that created the files.
